This passage is about using genetically modified food for famine relief. Read it carefully and mark the letter
A, B, C, or D on the answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 45.
Southern Africa governments are in a terrible dilemma: they have to choose between letting their citizens starve
to death or giving them genetically modified (GM) food that many believe is harmful to human health. This is the
problem which resulted when the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) provided Southern African governments
with thousands of tonnes of emergency food aid to help deal with the severe famine they were experiencing. Some
of this food came from the US, which produce large quantities of genetically modified (GM) maize and other
grains.
 3
Several governments in the region objected to the GM grain, especially Zambia and Zimbabwe, the countries
hardest hit by the drought. In Zambia, where some GM grain had already arrived, the government has banned their
distribution until the issue of safety is addressed.
Many Zambians believe that GM foods may lead to people experiencing new allergies and resistance to
antibiotics. There are also fears that genetically modified seeds may destroy local crops as they are much stronger.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, GM crops may have lasting effects on the ecosystem as the change in the
plant may cause it to be toxic. This in turn may lead to the extinction of some species and as a result, be
catastrophic for the natural world.
Supporters of genetically modified foods, of course, claim that there is no solid evidence that GM foods have
harmful side effects, adding that they can provide immediate relief to famine victims. But the true cost of using
them won't be known until many decades have passed. Let's hope that by then, it's not too late.

B. Strauss vs Ellis
Who Designed The Golden Gate Bridge?
The gGolden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that
spans San Francisco Bay. The bridge's design has
generally been attributed to Joseph Strauss, a
German-American engineer and designer. However,
recent evidence proves that Charles Ellis, a
professor, engineer and mathematician, was chiefly
responsible for the design of the bridge between
1929 and 1931.
An argument over the time it was taking to
complete the design, along with the number of
telegrams Ellis was using to discuss the design with
other engineers, led Strauss to accuse Ellis of
wasting time and money. Strauss then dismissed
Ellis in late 1931 and systematically removed any
mention of Ellis' name from his final report on the
bridge, issued in 1938.
Ellis was finally given official recognition for his
part in the designing process of the Golden Gate
Bridge on May 10, 2017.

Re: Application for Position of Civil Engineers
 Dear Mr Garrett,
I am applying for the civil engineering position,
posted on your site. I am a well-qualified and highly
skilled engineer and I would appreciate the opportunity
to discuss the skills and the experience I could offer
your company.
For the last 8 years, I have been involved in several
major projects providing high quality services to
Multiplex, an international and well-oranized company.
These have contributed to making substantial savings
for the company. My qualifications include a
postgraguate degree on contemporary roadway design
and a thorough knowledge of AutoCAD.
I firmly believe that my professional background
D. Golden Gate Bridge
Due to its magnificent design, the Golden Gate
Bridge was named one of the "Seven Engineering
Wonders of the Modern World".
One of the most interesting Golden Gate Bridge
facts is that only 11 workers died during its
construction, a new safty record for the time. In the
1930s, bridge builders expected at least one fatality
per $1 million in construction costs, and builders
expected around 35 people to die while erecting the
Golden Gate Bridge. One of the bridge's safety
innovations was a net placed under the work site.
During construction, this net saved the lives of 19
men, who are often called the members of the "Half
Way to Hell Club".
People come from all over the globe to learn how
 5
and experience conform perfectly to your requirements.
I have attached my CV and can be contacted by email at
esutherland@yahoo.com.
Thank you for considering my application. I am
available for an interview at your convenience.
 Yours Sincerly,
 Edgar Sutherland
this bridge was built. They even come to be inspired
by it. The best ways of exploring this attraction and
appreciating its true beauty are either to book a
Golden Gate Bridge Bike tour, offered from spring
through fall, or simply to walk over it.

The passage is about salmon. Read it carefully and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on the answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 76 to 80.
Many claim the best salmon is Alaskan, known for its juicy meat and delicate flavour. What is not well known is
what a difficult life these salmon lead, and how hard they work to reproduce.
Salmon start out as small eggs in a streambed. Once they hatch, hey spend a couple of years in mountain streams
and rivers, and then eventually gather in schools to swim out to sea together. During this stage of their life cycle,
their bodies begin to adapt themselves to endure the seawater conditions they will face. More specifically, they
develop a gland which removes salt from sea water so that they can drink it.
In the ocean, the adult salmon spends 1 to 4 years swimminh and feeding. This ocean life is hazardous as they
must constantly dodge a variety of predators: seals, whales and dealiest of all, fishermen. After swimming for over
2,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, they prepare for their return to their place of birth in order to reproduce. This
is the most fascinating part of the salmon's life: that which distinguishes it from most other fish. Adult salmon will
swim up to two thousand miles upstream to return to the exact same place where they hatched. They use their
outstanding sense of smell, as well as the stores of food and energy they have, to accomplish this. Constantly
jumping into the air, defying gravity, and swimming up waterfalls - it's no wonder that only the fittest make it.
 6
When they have reached their destination, the female clears a spot in the streambed with her tail and create a nest.
She then lays her eggs and the male fertilizes and protects them until, within a week or two, both salmon die,
leaving the embryos at the mercy of nature.
76: What is the main idea of this passage?
A. that eating salmon in Alaska is widespread
B. that most young salmon do not survive at sea
C. that salmon have an interesting birth
D. that salmon go to great lengths to reproduce
77: Why do younger salmon's bodies change?
A. to help them gather in schools
B. to help them stay together as a group
C. to allow them to survive in their new habitat
D. to make swimming easier
78: In the second sentence of the third paragraph, what is the meaning of the word "dodge"?
A. avoid B. chase C. learn about D. attract
79: Why is the salmon's trip back to its hatching grounds so interesting?
A. No other fish does this
B. They find the precise spot where they hatched
C. So many adult salmon survive such a difficult journey
D. They travel so far in such a short time
80: According to the passage, what is true about the life cycle of a salmon?
A. Salmon take care of their young for many years.
B. Their lives are similar to those of other fish.
C. They switch habitats three times in their lives.
D. Their lives end soon after reproducing.
