THE COMPETITION
The national championships are in two months. I’ll have been in hard training for just over fourteen weeks by then. When I say hard, I mean it. I estimate that I will have done about four and a half thousand laps of the track in my fourteen week training period. Young athletes from all over the country will be attending, all of whom will, like me. be hoping to impress the national coaches. I’ve been thinking about what l am going to do before the races start. People say you have to put the crowd and other competitors out of your mind. You are supposed to focus on warming up but I w ant to
remember every face. Coaches tell you not to think about winning, just running - but I’m going to. My parents are going to be there to watch me. I hope I’ll be able to do my best because their help has been important and I would really like to make them proud of me. I won't know until next week when we start timing my runs seriously what chance of winning I havie. My friends say that I am an optimist and, even though it will be my first timie at a big competition such as this, I think that I can get one of the first three places. This would be good enough for me to be considered for selection for the national team before the end of the year.
