The festival started in 1852, and part of the festival is bull fighting. But people of Pampalona needed to move the bulls from the stable arena, which was more than half a mile away. So each year, brave young men stood in front of the bulls. The bulls chased the young men, who ran to the arena. This is how the bulls were brought to the arena for the fights.
Over time, the Running of the Bulls grew famous. It was a way for men to test their courage. People came from over Spain to run with the bulls. Soon, people were coming from other parts of Europe and even America to run with the bulls. Running with the bulls is very dangerous, and every year people are injured and sometimes even die. Josh: Hey, I hear you and Stephanie are really getting serious.
Michael: Yeah, I think she'll be impressed with my new exercise program.
Josh: What? What are you talking about? What exercise program? What did you tell her?
Michael: Well, you know, I enjoy staying in shape. [Right] First, I generally get up every morning at 5:30 a.m.
Josh: Oh, yeah. Since when? You don't roll out of bed until at least 7:30 p.m.
Michael: No, no, and on Mondays and Wednesdays, . . .
Josh: Ah, not another tall tale . . .
Michael: I almost always go jogging for about a half hour, you know, to improve my endurance.
Josh: Hey, jogging to the refrigerator for a glass of milk doesn't count.
Michael: Of course, before I leave, I usually make sure I do some stretches so I don't pull a muscle on my run.
Josh: Right. One jumping jack.
Michael: Then, I told her that I usually lift weights Tuesdays and Thursdays for about an hour after work.
Josh: Humph.
Michael: This helps me build muscle strength.
Josh: A one-pound barbell.
Michael: Finally, I often go hiking on Saturdays with my dog [What dog!?], well, and I like hiking because it helps me burn off stress and reduce anxiety that builds up during the week.
Josh: Oh yeah, those lies.
Michael: Well, uh, as for Fridays, I sometimes just relax at home by watching a movie or inviting you over to visit.
Josh: If I buy the pizza.
Michael: But . . . bu . . . And on Sundays, I take the day off from exercising, but I usually take my dog for a walk.
Josh: Forget it. She'll never buy this story.
Script (5-8)
Caroline:
So, what are you going to do this summer?
Steve:
Well, I’m probably going to go on holiday with my parents and my sister for a week, but I suppose I really should get a summer job.  I haven’t planned anything yet, but I really need to get some money.   What about you?
Caroline:
I’m going to Scotland for the summer.
Steve:
For the whole summer?
Caroline:
Yes, well, I’m going for seven weeks.  I’m going to work in a youth hostel in the mountains.
Steve:
Really?  That sounds great!
Caroline:
Yes, I think so.  I mean, the work won’t be very interesting.  It’ll be mostly cooking, cleaning and working on reception, selling drinks and things.  But my hours are seven till ten in the morning and five till nine in the evening, so I’ll have plenty of time during the day to go walking.
Steve:
That sounds fun!  It’ll be like a holiday, but you’ll be earning money too.
Caroline:
Yes, it’s a chance to get out of the city and maybe meet some new people.
Steve:
I wish I could get a job like that.  How did you find out about it?
Caroline:
I read about it in a book called Summer Work Round Britain.  It tells you about all kinds of different jobs in different places.  You can work at farms picking fruit, or at hotels near the sea.  You can even get work at music festivals.
Steve:
Oh I like the sound of that!
Caroline:
Yes, of course the problem with that sort of work is that it only lasts a few days.  And once you’ve paid for your accommodation and food, you won’t have much money left.
Steve:
Oh yes, I didn’t think about that.    And knowing me, I’d spend all my extra money on music.  So do you have to pay for your accommodation and food in Scotland then?
Caroline:
Well, it’s quite good.  I’ll be staying in a shared bedroom, and they’ll take £15 a week out of my wages to pay for that.  My breakfast will be free, because I’ll probably be cooking breakfast for the guests!  I can get dinner in the evening at a reduced price, so I only have to worry about lunch.
Steve:
Well, I hope you have a great time.
Caroline:
Thanks.  I’ll lend you the book if you like.  Maybe you’ll find something too.
Steve:
Isn’t it too late to apply?
Caroline:
I don’t think so.  Anyway, it’s worth a try.
