1.Small Talk May Make Us Happier
Small talk. Chitchat. These are the short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the
store, at family events or work. Sometimes we make small talk with people we already know but not well.
Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers.
Many people find these small conversations about random topics difficult. Some people say they hate it.
Others say small talk is a waste of time. They may even call it idle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn’t
do anything. They consider small talk not important.
However, small talk is important. These exchanges can open doors that may lead to larger, more
meaningful conversations. When you first meet someone or talk to someone you don't know well, it would be
awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life.
2.What Is the Future of US Nuclear Power Industry?
As America’s nuclear power industry continues to suffer major economic difficulties, some are questioning
whether it can - or should - survive. The latest setback came July 31, when state power companies in South
Carolina halted construction of two reactors. After spending about $9 billion, the companies decided that
increasing costs and repeated building delays did not make the project worth finishing.
U.S. energy company Westinghouse Electric had been building the nuclear plant, which it started in 2012.
In March, Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy, due in part to huge losses related to the South Carolina project,
as well as others. Industry groups had hoped the South Carolina reactors would mark a new beginning for U.S.
nuclear power and show the benefits of the latest technology. The United States remains the world’s top
producer of nuclear power, according to the British-based World Nuclear Association. The country’s 100
reactors provide nearly 20 percent of total U.S. electrical output.
However, only two new nuclear reactors are currently being built in the United States – both of them in
Georgia. The reactors were the first large nuclear plants to be started in the United States in more than 30
years. And the future of those reactors is uncertain. The project - currently about half-finished - has also
suffered major cost overruns and delays. For now, the company’s parent, Japan-based Toshiba, has promised
to provide at least $3.7 billion to finish the project.

Friends are a necessity in every child’s life. They are there to comfort, to laugh with, and to create wonderful
memories.Friendship is being there for someone when they need you, and to have a common bond to have the
freedom of hanging out with each other and to be comfortable around each other. The main ideas of friendship are
honesty and trust, caring and having similarities.
Without honesty and trust, friendship wouldn’t last very long. The definition of honesty is “quality and condition of
being honest, integrity”. Friendship would be held up by honesty. Trust is another important thing that relates to
honesty, your friends really need to trust you.
In addition, you need to care for your friends so the relationship will last. The definition for caring is to be concerned or
interested for others. An example of care is being there when someone really need you like during a bad situation. You
should also be supportive of your friends.
Thirdly, similarities in friendship will make the bond grow. The definition of similarities is the quality or condition of
being alike, resemblance. For example, two friends like the same kind of music. Similarities in interests are things like a
couple of friends liking the same thing like music, hobbies and many other things. It would help by making them want
to do more things together.
Good friends will always use honesty and trust, caring and support, and similarities in interest if they want their
friendship to last.
V.Read the passage and do the task that follows/do the tasks that follow
Generally, friendship exists for three reasons: virtue; usefulness; or pleasure. When virtue is the reason, friendship
exists for the sake of friendship; where both like each other and cherish each other for some creditable values in the
other's personality. You know that you would even die to swear your friendship for that person. You also know that the
other would make you live than die for him/her regardless of intelligence, handsomeness, utility or the capability of
giving pleasure.
A friendship of the second kind is formed for the practical value of it. How useful so and so is to me? What can I
benefit from him? Will he use his reputation and influence to fetch me a good job? Thus a person may maintain
relationship for practical, professional, and political reasons. However, once we do away with the usefulness, the
friendship eventually dies.
Friendship of the third kind is formed essentially on account of the pleasure the relationship can give. He is a
joker. The moment he enters, you forget all your worries. She is cute, intelligent and charming. The very notion that
she is your friend makes you feel proud. The point rests here: How good is he/she in giving me pleasure-physically,
emotionally, mentally and materially?
Now to the question: Which of the three is good? The second type is good, yet since basing on utility, it falls short of
longevity and quality. The third type is good too, but how long one enjoys only pleasure in life? But the first type ,
virtue-based friendship is fantastic for this reason: it lasts till the end of this universe.
